AI and the Pope: Thinking About What's Really Valuable
Even the Pope is talking about AI! Here's how to think about what AI means for your future and your wallet.
Inspired by: Pope Leo Warns of Risks From A.I. in 42,300-Word Encyclical - The New York Times
Did you see the news today? Even Pope Leo, a super important leader for many people around the world, wrote a huge letter – 42,300 words! – all about the risks and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence, or AI. It's a really big deal when someone like the Pope spends so much time thinking and writing about something, especially technology. It shows just how much AI is changing our world, and how important it is for everyone, even kids, to understand it.
When we hear about AI, sometimes it sounds like something out of a science fiction movie. But AI is already a part of our daily lives, from how your parents' phones suggest the next word they type, to how streaming services recommend shows you might like, to even some of the games you play.
What Does AI Have to Do With Your Money?
You might be thinking, "What does AI have to do with my allowance or saving up for a new video game?" A lot, actually
! The Pope's letter, even though it's about big ethical ideas, makes us think about what we truly value and how new technologies can impact that.
Think about it this way:
-
Skills for the Future: As AI gets better at doing certain tasks, what skills will be most important for you to have when you grow up? Will it be coding, creativity, problem-solving, or things that AI can't easily do, like showing empathy or leading a team? Learning these "human" skills now can be a great investment in your future earning potential. The more unique and valuable your skills are, the more opportunities you'll have.
-
Saving Time (and Money): AI can help us be more efficient. Maybe it can help your parents plan grocery lists to save money, or help you research a school project faster. When you save time, you free up more time for other things – maybe even earning a little extra money with a chore, or learning a new skill.
-
Making Choices About Spending: As AI creates new products and services, you'll have more choices about how you spend your money. Will you buy the latest gadget powered by AI, or save your money for an experience? Understanding what AI can and cannot do will help you make smarter decisions about what's worth your hard-earned cash. For example, if an AI can write a basic story, maybe you'd rather spend your money on a human-written book that sparks your imagination in a unique way.
-
Protecting Your "Digital Self": A big part of AI involves data – information about you! As you get older and use more apps and websites, companies collect data. Understanding that your data has value, and learning how to protect your privacy online, is a crucial money skill in the AI age. Think of your personal information like your wallet – you wouldn't just leave it lying around, right?
Investing in Yourself, Not Just Gadgets
The Pope's message, at its heart, is about thinking deeply about what's important. For you, that means thinking about what truly helps you grow, learn, and become a happy, capable adult. Sometimes that's a new tech toy, but often it's investing in experiences, education, and developing skills that AI can't replicate.

Maybe you decide to save up for a class that teaches you something new, or a trip that broadens your horizons. These kinds of "investments in yourself" can pay off big time in the long run, both in terms of happiness and future financial success.
P.S. This week, talk with your child about a skill they have that AI can't do. Is it drawing, telling jokes, playing a sport, or being a kind friend? Help them appreciate the unique value of their human abilities.
