Block Those Annoying Ads: Your Money's New Best Friend?

Learn how ad-blockers like PipePipe work and why they might save you money, even if they seem 'free'!

Inspired by: PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock

Have you ever been watching your favorite cartoon or a cool science experiment video online, and BAM! an ad pops up right in the middle? It’s super annoying, right? Well, a new app called PipePipe is making waves on the internet, and it’s all about helping people skip those ads, especially the ones that interrupt videos. It's a "fork" of another app called NewPipe, and it's getting a lot of attention for adding a feature called SponsorBlock.

Now, you might be thinking, "What does skipping ads have to do with money?" Great question! It has more to do with your money than you might think, even if you’re not the one paying for a subscription to skip ads.

Time is Money (Even for Kids!)

Think about how much time you spend waiting for ads to finish. If an ad is 30 seconds long and you watch 10 videos a day, that’s 5 minutes every single day just waiting

A kid with a frustrated expression watches a large, slowly dripping faucet, while a small, rapidly filling bucket overflows with coins next to a clock with no numbers. ! Over a week, that’s 35 minutes. Over a month, that’s over two hours! What could you do with two extra hours? You could read a book, play outside, work on a cool project, or even earn some allowance by helping out around the house. When you use something like PipePipe to block ads, you're essentially "saving" your time. And saved time can be used for things that are more productive, fun, or even help you earn money.

The "Free" Trap and Your Choices

Many online services, like video streaming sites, are "free" because they show you ads. The ads are how they make money. But sometimes, these ads try to get you to buy things you don't need or even things that are really expensive. Have you ever seen an ad for a super cool toy or a new video game and suddenly felt like you had to have it? That’s what ads are designed to do

A child's piggy bank, looking a bit thin, is surrounded by a swirling vortex of colorful, enticing toy ads that are trying to pull money out of its coin slot. !

Using an ad-blocker like PipePipe changes that. It means you’re not constantly bombarded with messages telling you to spend. This can help you make smarter choices about what you really want and need, rather than just what an ad tells you is cool. It’s like putting on blinders when you walk past a candy store – you’re less tempted to spend your hard-earned allowance on something you might regret later.

Think Before You Click (or Buy!)

Even without ad-blockers, this is a great lesson for kids. When you see an ad, whether it's on TV, online, or in a magazine, pause and think:

  • Do I really need this? Or do I just want it because the ad makes it look so good?
  • Is this a good value? Could I get something similar for less money, or something better for the same money?
  • Where would the money come from? If it's your allowance, is this the best way to spend it?

Tools like PipePipe show us that there's a whole world of choices out there about how we consume information and entertainment. Sometimes, those choices can save us time, help us make smarter spending decisions, and even protect us from things we don't want to see. It's all about being a smart digital citizen and a smart money manager!

P.S. This week, try a "no-ad challenge" with your kids. For one day, whenever an ad pops up, instead of just waiting, ask them to think about what they could be doing with that time, or what the ad is trying to make them buy. It's a simple way to build awareness!
