Chores for 3-Year-Olds
preschoolThree-year-olds can copy what you do but get bored after 90 seconds. Pick chores you can do alongside them and announce when they're done with a high five.
Pay context for age 3
Most 3-year-olds don't need cash yet — a sticker chart or one penny per chore is plenty. The lesson at this age is the routine, not the dollar.
12 age-appropriate chores
Each chore below shows a typical pay range, time estimate, and how much parent supervision it still needs. Use these as a starting point — the right number of chores is the one your kid can sustain for at least four weeks straight without nagging.

Don't schedule three jobs at once — pick one or two for the day. Three-year-olds remember by routine, not by list.
When they refuse: If they refuse, do it together for the first 30 seconds. Most refusals at this age are "I don't want to do it alone," not real defiance.
The parent angle
The whole point at age 3 is association: doing a small job means a small thank-you (sticker, hug, penny). The routine is the entire lesson — money exchange isn't needed yet.
Frequently asked
Should I pay a 3-year-old for chores?
You can, but a sticker chart works just as well. If you do pay, use pennies or quarters and let them see the coins go into a clear jar. The visual stack matters more than the amount.
What if they only do half the chore?
Praise the half they did and finish it together. Withholding a sticker for an incomplete chore is too abstract — they'll associate cleaning with failure.
How long should a 3-year-old chore take?
90 seconds to 5 minutes max. After that, attention is gone. Save longer routines for 4-5.
