What this planet teaches

What Is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a number (300-850) that represents how trustworthy you are with borrowed money.

What affects your score:

  • Payment history (35%) — Do you pay bills on time? Most important factor.
  • Amount owed (30%) — How much of your available credit are you using?
  • Length of history (15%) — How long have you had credit accounts?
  • New credit (10%) — Have you opened lots of new accounts recently?
  • Credit mix (10%) — Do you have different types of credit?

  • Why it matters: Your credit score affects:

  • Whether you can get a loan (and the interest rate)
  • Apartment rental applications
  • Cell phone plans
  • Car insurance rates
  • Even some job applications

  • Good scores:

  • 750+ = Excellent (best rates on everything)
  • 700-749 = Good
  • 650-699 = Fair
  • Below 650 = Poor (hard to get approved, high rates)

  • Building good credit (for when you're older):

    1. Get a student or secured credit card

    2. Use it for small purchases

    3. Pay it off IN FULL every month

    4. Never miss a payment

    5. Don't use more than 30% of your limit

    How a planet works

Go through a short lesson with the KidCash mascot, three or four cards with a question to tap and reveal on each set. Last comes a three-question checkpoint: answer two correctly to clear the planet and earn the Credit Scholar badge. Lesson progress stays in this browser; when a kid signs in, planet badges and any Family-plan badge rewards save to their KidCash profile.

Land on Credit Observatory to try the lesson cards and checkpoint. Then play the mini game, which practices the same idea.

The game: Credit Climb: make a money choice each month and watch your credit score climb or slip.
