What Are Taxes?

Taxes are mandatory payments to the government that fund public services.

Where your tax money goes:

  • Schools and education
  • Roads, bridges, public transit
  • Military and defense
  • Social Security and Medicare (for older people)
  • Police and fire departments
  • Parks and libraries
  • Scientific research

  • Types of taxes:

  • Income tax — percentage of what you earn (the biggest one)
  • Sales tax — added to purchases (you already pay this!)
  • Property tax — on homes and land
  • Capital gains tax — on investment profits

  • How income tax works:

If you earn $50,000, you don't pay one flat rate on all of it. The US uses brackets:

  • First $11,000: 10%
  • $11,001-$44,725: 12%
  • $44,726-$95,375: 22%
  • And so on...

  • So you might pay ~12% overall, not the highest bracket rate. This is called a marginal tax system.

When you'll deal with taxes: Once you get your first job (even part-time), you'll see taxes taken from your paycheck. It can be a surprise! If you earn $15/hour and work 20 hours, you might expect $300 — but after taxes, you get about $250.

    How a planet works

Go through a short lesson with the KidCash mascot, three or four cards with a question to tap and reveal on each set. Last comes a three-question checkpoint: answer two correctly to clear the planet and earn the Tax Whiz badge. Lesson progress stays in this browser; when a kid signs in, planet badges and any Family-plan badge rewards save to their KidCash profile.

Land on Tax Spire to try the lesson cards and checkpoint. This planet’s mini game is arriving soon.
