AI & Your Allowance: What Happens When Jobs Change?

How new technology, like AI, can change jobs and what that means for how we earn and save money.

Inspired by: America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?

Have you ever thought about what your parents do for work? Or maybe what you want to be when you grow up? It's a big question, and it's always changing! Today, one of the big headlines making people talk on Hacker News is about jobs disappearing in creative fields. The article, "America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?", points to a real shift happening because of new technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Now, 200,000 jobs sounds like a huge number, and it is! It means a lot of people who used to draw, write, edit videos, or work on movie sets might be looking for new ways to use their talents. This isn't the first time technology has changed jobs. Think about how many people used to deliver milk to houses, or operate elevators – those jobs mostly don't exist anymore because of new inventions!

What Does This Mean for Your Money?

This news might seem far away, but it actually has some cool lessons for you about money, no matter if you're 5 or 15.

1. Skills are Your Superpower: Just like a superhero needs different powers for different challenges, you need different skills to earn money. When technology changes jobs, it means some skills become less needed, and new skills become super important. If you love drawing, maybe learning how to use AI tools to help you draw, instead of replace you, could be a new skill. Or if you're good at writing, maybe learning to code or understand how websites work will open up new opportunities. The more skills you have, especially skills that are hard for computers to do, the more valuable you'll be in the future.

2. Learning Never Stops: This isn't just about school. It's about being curious and always trying to learn new things. Maybe you're saving up for a new video game. If you also spend some time learning how that game was made, or how to create your own levels, you're building skills that could be valuable later on. The world is always changing, and the best way to keep earning and making money is to keep learning.

3. Saving is Smart for the Unexpected: Imagine if your parent's job suddenly changed because of a new invention. It could be tough for a while to find something new. This is why saving money is so important! It's not just for buying that cool toy you want. It's also for those times when things don't go as planned. Having some "emergency money" saved up means you're prepared if something unexpected happens, like needing to buy new supplies for a new hobby, or if a family member needs help.

Your Future, Your Choices

You might not be thinking about your career right now, but every time you choose to learn something new, or save some of your allowance, you're building a foundation for your future. The world will keep changing, but by being adaptable, curious, and smart with your money, you'll be ready for whatever comes next!

P.S. This week, talk with your child about a skill they enjoy and brainstorm one new thing they could learn related to it. For example, if they love building with LEGOs, could they watch a YouTube video on advanced building techniques or even try designing their own LEGO instructions? It's all about fostering that lifelong learning mindset!
